Amersfoort

Amersfoort is a beautiful city located in the middle of the Netherlands in the province of Utrecht. Through numerous monuments, cosy little streets, canals and architectural details you can really feel the medieval core of the city, established here in the 13th century. The compact city is surrounded with lush swathes of nature. Amersfoort is the conveniently reachable, both by car and by train. It’s only 30 minutes to Schiphol Airport!

The City

Fans of history will immediately feel at home in Amersfoort. The city obtained its city rights in 1259, and the history is still clearly visible in the centre. There are 650 monuments, like the Koppelpoort, the Onze Lieve Vrouwe tower and the Wall Houses, which are all worth the visit. More than a million tourists, both Dutch and from abroad, visit the city annually. Amersfoort is not only famous for its monuments, but also for its art. Did you know, for example, that Amersfoort was the birth place of the famous painter Piet Mondriaan? You can visit the house in which he was born and learn about the life of the abstract painter in the Mondriaan House. After that, visit the National Military Museum, where you can learn about the history of the Dutch army. The Van Gogh Museum and the Kröller-Müller Museum are just 45 minutes away, too. Amersfoort combines a historical atmosphere with modern shopping comfort. If you are looking for the latest trends, bargain deals, accessories for your house or smart gadgets — this is the place to be. With its mix of well-known stores and unique boutiques, shopping in Amersfoort’s centre is a feast for everyone. Visit a number of markets in the city centre, like the flea market and the flower market. When you’re done shopping, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can have a wonderful dinner or go for drinks.

Amersfoort's historical city centre is filled with big brand stores as well as many independent shops. The shops are generally open 7 days a week.
