TRAVEL TIPS

Car Travel

You can certainly get by without a car, particularly if your hotel is close to Christiansted and offers a shuttle into town, but more than on most of the other Virgin Islands, having a car is a big advantage on St. Croix. With a wide variety of good restaurants and no large concentration of accommodations around either Christiansted or Frederiksted, a car can be very helpful regardless of where you are staying. Accommodations along the north shore are even more isolated, making a car more of a necessity to travelers staying there. Even if you are staying in or near Christiansted, you might want to rent a car for a day or two so you can explore the island.

Although roads are not well sign-posted, there's a highway from the airport to the East End of the island that makes travel fairly easy. Street parking can be hard to find in Christiansted, but there are some paid lots. Just remember that you drive on the left even though cars are U.S.–made with steering wheels on the left.
